Volvo Cars entered the smart home space by investing in an energy company based in Montreal, Canada. The Swedish automaker has chosen to support dbel's development efforts through its venture capital arm, Volvo Cars technology Fund, but the technology is likely to be closely integrated with Volvo's own V2X project.
Alexander Petrofski, CEO of Volvo Cars Technology Fund, said: "With the development of smart ev charging station in both directions, home energy management systems will play a vital role." "Rising energy prices coupled with frequent power outages are challenges facing consumers today, and our investment in dbel and its technology helps our customers mitigate those challenges."
As Petrofski mentioned, the company's two-way charging station type 2 can harness the energy of an electric vehicle to power a home during peak utility prices or power outages. Less dramatic use cases for V2X capabilities naturally include the form of virtual power plants that help control energy demand and sell energy back to the grid.
As for dbel, the company is developing the r16 home energy station and hopes Volvo will help realize its ambition to enter the market.
Its smart chargers are not only for electric vehicles, but also for smart home energy management through the Orchestrate OS platform. The system converts both rooftop photovoltaics and electricity stored in household batteries. As a result, dbel writes, the device could automatically manage the energy of the entire home.
Once installed, the smart home ev charger will also automate all energy management decisions involving EVs, including automatic charging, vehicle-to-home peaking when utility rates are high, outage protection and demand-based vehicle-to-grid output, as well as preventing battery degradation.
Using a proprietary app, homeowners can maintain visibility and control over their energy through smartphones and other connected devices.
