There is a serious shortage of electric vehicle charging piles in the EU

EU carmakers have complained about the slow rollout of charging stations across the bloc. To keep up with the boom in electric vehicles, 8.8 million charging piles will be needed by 2030.

EU carmakers said on Monday (April 29) that the pace of installation of charging piles in the 27 EU member states has not kept pace with the growing pace of electric vehicles.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) pointed out in its latest report that since 2017, the sales of electric vehicles in the EU have grown three times faster than the installed capacity of charging piles.

ACEA said that by 2030, the EU will need 8.8 million charging piles, which means that 22,000 charging piles will need to be installed every week, which is eight times the current installation rate.

According to estimates by the European Commission, the EU will need 3.5 million charging piles by 2030.

The report adds that infrastructure is key to motivating more people to buy electric vehicles, which is crucial to the EU’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The importance of electric vehicle infrastructure to climate goals

The European Climate Law passed in 2021 obliges EU member states to reduce emissions levels to 55% of 1990 levels by 2030.

The 2050 climate neutrality target means that the EU as a whole reaches net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vrie said in a press release: “We need mass adoption of electric vehicles in all EU countries to achieve Europe’s ambitious emissions reduction targets.”

“This would not be possible without public charging infrastructure spread across the EU.”

Therefore, charging piles are a good opportunity for the European market at present.
