On February 21, the signing ceremony for Turkey’s first gigawatt energy storage project was held grandly in the capital Ankara. Turkish Vice President Devet Yilmaz personally came to this event and witnessed this important moment together with Chinese Ambassador to Turkey Liu Shaobin.
This landmark project will be jointly implemented by the Chinese enterprise Harbin Electric International Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Harbin Electric International”) and the Turkish Progress Energy Company (Progresiva energy). The total investment in the project is expected to be up to US$400 million, and it is currently in the early stage of financing. According to the plan, the project will break ground in the Tekirdag region in January 2025 and is expected to be officially put into operation in 2027.
After the project is completed, the power of the power station’s energy storage system will reach 250 megawatts, and the maximum reserve can reach 1 gigawatt. This achievement will fill the gap in the field of gigawatt-scale energy storage power stations in Türkiye. It is worth mentioning that the electricity stored in this project mainly comes from wind power, which will not only bring convenience to the lives of Turkish people, but also comply with the country’s policy requirements of actively promoting green energy. While helping Turkey achieve its 2053 carbon neutrality goal, it also effectively promotes the development of the country’s new energy industry.
Ambassador Liu Shaobin delivered a speech at the signing ceremony, emphasizing that the successful signing of the energy storage project is of great significance. This marks the continuous improvement of the level of new energy cooperation between China and Turkey, the continuous expansion of the scope of cooperation, and the quality of cooperation to a new level. Energy cooperation is a key area of the Belt and Road Initiative. China has carried out energy project cooperation with more than 100 countries and regions, including Turkey, playing an active role in achieving sustainable development of local energy and maintaining global energy security and stability.
Ambassador Liu Shaobin expressed his expectations for Chinese companies such as HEI, hoping that they would continue to implement the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, actively participate in the construction of Turkey’s energy field, and make more contributions to Turkey’s energy security and economic and social development. This statement undoubtedly injected strong impetus into the in-depth cooperation between China and Turkey in the field of new energy.
With the signing of the energy storage project, China and Turkey will cooperate more closely in the field of new energy. On the road of jointly responding to global climate change and promoting the development of green energy, the two countries have worked hand in hand to make positive contributions to global sustainable development.
