Recently, South Korea's Hyundai Motor announced that its electric vehicle charging joint venture "iONNA", jointly established with global auto giants such as BMW, GM, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has held an opening ceremony at its Durham headquarters in North Carolina, USA, marking the official start of iONNA's deployment of charging networks across the United States. It is reported that iONNA has set up several new charging stations in Willoughby, Springfield, Ohio, and Scranton, Pennsylvania, and has put them into operation. In addition, there are 6 charging stations under construction. iONNA's goal is to install more than 1,000 charging piles across the United States by the end of 2025, and has formulated a longer-term plan to deploy more than 30,000 charging stations by 2030 to meet the growing demand for electric vehicle charging.
To ensure the compatibility and reliability of the charging stations, iONNA has conducted extensive testing since the end of 2024. More than 4,400 charging tests were conducted on 80 different models, covering the mainstream electric vehicle brands on the market. Through these tests, iONNA is able to ensure that its charging stations can provide stable and efficient charging services for a variety of electric vehicles.
Currently, Tesla dominates the fast charging station market in the United States, with a market share of about two-thirds. However, with the rise of the "Charging Alliance" formed by Hyundai Motor and other automakers, Tesla's monopoly in the charging network market is expected to be broken. The establishment and rapid development of iONNA heralds a profound change in the competitive landscape of the electric vehicle charging market.
