France has announced plans to invest an additional €200 million to accelerate the development of electric charging stations across the country, according to Transport Minister Clément Beaune. France currently ranks as the second best-equipped country in Europe, with 110,000 public charging terminals installed, a four-fold increase in four years. However, only 10% of these terminals are fast-charging, which is crucial for encouraging motorists to transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles.
The new investment aims to speed up the deployment of charging stations, particularly focusing on fast-charging infrastructure. French President Emmanuel Macron has set a target of having 400,000 public charging terminals in the country by 2030. Concurrently, the number of electric vehicles is expected to increase tenfold to 13 million by 2030, according to projections by Avere, an organization promoting the use of electric and hybrid vehicles.
The €200 million package will support the development of fast-charging stations, installations in collective housing, on-street charging stations, and charging stations for heavy goods vehicles. Additionally, the ecological bonus offered to low-income drivers to purchase an electric vehicle, currently set at €7,000, will be increased, although the specific amount has not yet been decided. The tax credit for home charging terminal installations will also be raised from €300 to €500.
Furthermore, the ministry plans to publish decrees outlining the rules for a social leasing system in the coming days. This system will enable low-income drivers to purchase electric cars for €100 per month. Other measures, including tax incentives for companies to retrofit internal combustion vehicles with electric or hydrogen engines, are also in the pipeline.
These initiatives reflect France’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and establishing a comprehensive charging infrastructure throughout the country. By investing in charging stations, increasing incentives, and implementing supportive policies, France aims to drive the transition to a greener and more sustainable transportation system.
