Excluding Tesla, the U.S. has only achieved 3% of its charging station goal

The U.S. goal of installing fast smart ev charging station nationwide to support the transition to electric vehicles may be in vain.

The U.S. government announced in 2022 that it would plan a $7.5 billion budget to build at least 500,000 public smart ev charging station across the country by 2030.

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), excluding Tesla's Supercharger network, the United States has only gone 3.1% of the way to achieve the public smart ev charging station target by 2030. If the Tesla fast smart ev charging station network, which is currently mainly provided to Tesla drivers, is included, the United States has completed 9.1% of the fast smart ev charging station target.

Charging facilities are few and slow

According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Energy, the United States currently has only 65,700 smart ev charging station and a total of 181,000 smart ev charging station. Consulting firm AlixPartners estimates that $50 billion is needed to achieve Biden's goal of building a network of 500,000 public smart ev charging station in the United States by 2030. The $7.5 billion proposed by Biden only accounts for about 15% of it.

Previously, NREL said that the United States is expected to install 1.2 million public smart ev charging station by 2030 to meet the rapidly growing demand for electric vehicles. Of these 1.2 million smart ev charging station, about 1 million are expected to be L2 smart ev charging station, which can provide convenient and low-cost charging services to meet various daily needs, and the remaining smart ev charging station are L3 DC fast smart ev charging station, which can dispel the owner's range anxiety and provide convenience for long-distance travel.

Overall, the U.S. added more than 12,400 new public smart ev charging station in the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 8.4%. The Northwest saw the most significant growth in public smart ev charging station—a 13% increase in the third quarter—which the lab attributes to the installation of new Level 2 chargers in several states, including Washington.
