ChargePoint launches “Double Gun” dc ev charger

On August 8, ChargePoint, a US dc ev charger network company, announced the launch of a new dc ev charger product “Omni Port”, claiming that it can “ensure that any electric vehicle can be charged in any parking space”.

Simply put, this AC and dc ev charger called “Omni Port” is equipped with two charging guns, corresponding to the “Compatible Charging System” (CCS) and Tesla’s “North American Charging Standard” (NACS).

CCS and NACS are the two most commonly used charging standards in North America. Although CCS has received strong support from the US federal government, Tesla’s NACS has recently been on the verge of unifying the North American dc ev charger network.

Since last year, many electric vehicle manufacturers, including Ford, General Motors, and Rivian, have successively announced that they will “join” NACS to allow their owners to access Tesla’s dc ev charger network. But many electric vehicles on the road now still use CCS.

According to the press release, Omni Port provides an electric vehicle connector solution that ensures that any electric vehicle can be charged in any parking space, regardless of the type of connector, and does not require the owner to carry additional cables.

Drivers only need to enter the make and model of their vehicle into the ChargePoint app, click on Charge, and the dc ev charger will automatically unlock the corresponding connector, the dc ev charger gun. For drivers who don’t use the app, they can select it on the charger’s screen.

ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer wrote in a statement, “With Omni Port, the company has solved the challenges posed by the multiple connector environment and ensured that drivers of Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles can expect a world-class dc ev charger experience.”
