The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Authority recently announced that it will hold an investment bid worth 18.2 billion reais (approximately 5 reais per US dollar) in March this year, aiming to build 6,460 kilometers of transmission lines and new substations. According to the latest report from the Brazilian Energy Research Company, Brazil will need to invest 56.2 billion reais in the next few years to reconstruct and expand transmission lines, including the construction of new lines, new substations and the improvement of existing transmission projects.
In recent years, Brazilian residential and industrial electricity demand has continued to grow. According to data from the Brazilian Energy Research Company, Brazil’s national electricity consumption will exceed 530,000 gigawatt hours in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 4.2%. In addition, electricity consumption hit a record high for three consecutive months from October to December 2023. In addition to the impact of extreme hot weather, the good performance of the industrial and commercial sector is also an important factor leading to the increase in electricity consumption.
Brazilian media reported that as the demand for electricity continues to grow, Brazil needs to further improve its power transmission system. Large-scale power outages in the north and northeast in August 2023 triggered widespread discussions about revamping the nation’s transmission system. Edma Almeida, a professor at the Energy Research Institute of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, said that in recent years, the types of power generation in Brazil have shown a trend of diversification, especially in the northeastern region, where the amount of clean energy power generation such as solar and wind energy has increased significantly. Real-time monitoring and transmission of power System flexibility puts forward higher requirements.
In order to improve the stability of the transmission system, Brazil held transmission line concession contract bidding and energy transmission project bidding in June and December 2023 respectively. The investments in the two bids were R$15.7 billion and R$21.7 billion respectively, which were used to build 33 projects in seven states and expand the transmission capacity of clean energy from the northeastern region to power consumption centers in the southeast, central and other regions. Sandoval Fetosa, director of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Authority, said that these bids will promote power interconnection in various regions across the country and build a more efficient and safer power transmission system.
Alexandre Silvera, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, believes that Brazil’s transmission system lacks stability and new transmission lines need to be built to improve this problem. At the same time, due to the long distance between the northeastern region where clean energy production is concentrated and the southeastern region where electricity consumption is concentrated, the necessity of transmission line construction becomes even more prominent.
In addition, Brazilian media believe that the reconstruction and expansion of transmission lines will also promote investment in green hydrogen projects in Brazil. Green hydrogen is considered a clean, abundant and cheap new energy source. The new transmission infrastructure project will promote the development of the green hydrogen industry and is of great significance to the Northeast and even Brazil as a whole.
