ACEA: EU needs 8.8 million electric vehicle charging stations by 2030

According to reports, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said that in order to meet future demand, the European Union needs to add nearly eight times the number of new electric vehicle charging stations each year than in 2023.

In 2023, more than 150,000 public charging stations were installed across the EU, with a total of more than 630,000. ACEA said in a statement that the EU's plan is to bring the total number of public charging stations in the region to 3.5 million by 2030. This means that about 410,000 public charging stations will need to be installed each year. However, ACEA warned that the demand of electric vehicle owners has quickly exceeded this goal, with the growth rate of electric vehicle sales in the EU three times that of charging station installations between 2017 and 2023.

"We are very concerned that the construction of infrastructure has not kept pace with the growth of pure electric vehicle sales in recent years. What's more, this 'infrastructure gap' is likely to widen further in the future," ACEA Secretary General said in a statement.

ACEA estimates that the EU needs 8.8 million new charging stations by 2030 to meet market demand. This is equivalent to 1.2 million new charging stations per year, eight times the number installed last year. ACEA Secretary General added:“ Investment in public charging infrastructure must be stepped up urgently if we are to close the infrastructure gap and achieve our emissions reduction targets.”
